    One of the best ever
    Nehi

If you are curious about this unit just as I was, I am here to tell you that it lives up to the hype and then some. I had to wait 6 months plus to find one, I actually had to contact Paul himself and he was kind enough to keep me abreast of manufacturing timelines. Everything is handmade and assembled by him, to say this is premium doesn't do it enough justice. It feels like it would last years and years. The manufacturing pedigree is next to none so far in my experience. Moving on to the sonic qualities, I can say for a fact that this is the sweetest sound mic pre I have heard; the vividness and thickness of the mid-range is so musical and beautiful to listen to, it was the first time I ever liked my vox without effects. I tracked a talented singer recently and my signal chain was Stam Audio 251 --- Sunset Sound Tutti 500 --- no EQ or compression. When I played it back to the singer, she said she sounded almost like Celine Dion and I agreed. She came back the next day to redo a couple of older tracks she had recorded at a commercial facility in Raleigh NC. If you record a lot of vocals, especially singers and also pianos.. and you somehow find this available, don't think twice, pay the price.

Great, great, great sounding device. Nice job Paul Wolff. I have used the real Sunset Sound console preamps in all three Sunset Sound (studio 1 (older)-studio 2 pre-neve) and studio 3. I helped build the studio 3 Frank DeMeddio console during my time working there in the late 70's, and this unit has that sound I loved, or as close as I'll ever come without the actual rooms tone and Sunset Industries hardware. Compared to an API 312, it is so much fuller, with low and mid energy clarity and punch, while the open high frequencies were clear and pristine. The definition and imaging in the midrange is incredible, it is dead quiet, flexible as all get out with the switched gain and output fader, and instantly translated in everything I put it on. Better than ALL of my other preamps (API, Neve, etc.) hands down. Although a modern implementation and not identical (surface mount components in 990C discreet opamps, no output isolator inductors, etc.), the sound was instantly so close to my memory, that I was ecstatic. Try them on direct, bass sounds like no other! I truly don't understand why these weren't instantly snapped up. They are a little expensive, but so worth it. I am SO glad to have a pair in my 500 rack. These are preamps I will probably never sell, and they are a tribute to Tutti Camarata RIP, lovingly implemented by Paul C, Paul W, Erik Benton, and PMI. God bless Dean Jensen! Grab these while you still can.

What We Think

The Sunset Sound Tutti is a total TONE MACHINE of the highest calibre. This preamp has quality in spades. Looking inside, you notice that only PREMIUM quality components are used throughout. It's seriously over-built (as premium quality gear should be). The fact is that the only way to have ever gotten the sound of this preamp on your recordings was to book time in Studio 1 at Sunset - if you could even get in, that is. Designed by Paul Camarata with assistance by Paul Wolff (formerly of API and Tonelux fame - currently Fix Audio), this production adaptation of the original Sunset Sound Studio 1 preamp really exhibits high-performance character that we feel sets it apart from the standard-fare mic preamps offered today. It doesn't simply pass signal; it transmits music. Trying to talk about the sound of this truly awe-inspiring preamp is a bit like the old adage - "dancing about architecture." You really need to hear it for yourself to understand just how wonderful the Sunset Sound S1P "Tutti" really sounds. There's a real clarity to this preamp that also carries a wallop of a weighty punch to it. You really cannot ask for more. Visually, the fun and Pacific Sunset-inspired yellow-to-orange-fade face plate perhaps makes it easy for many to dismiss this preamp as a toy and not something to take seriously. They couldn't be more wrong. It's unfortunate that these days, there is often more of a focus on how a piece of gear looks instead of how it sounds, and often who is endorsing it. And to a degree, we understand the mentality. But, No - it's not a Neve, and it's not an API. But that declaration should not imply that it is any less of the preamp than either of the two. In fact, to know the three, it's totally fair to say "The Neve and the API are NOT the Sunset Sound S1P "Tutti"." Having had experience with both of the famous flavors and with the Sunset Sound S1P "Tutti", we can say without a doubt that it is a classic sound you would happily want an entire bank of and never look back. And, when the rubber meets the road, this is a precision monster of a device exhibiting the soul of a classic-era American muscle car.
