The Universal Audio 4-710D Channel Strip gives you four channels of 710 Solid State / Tube hybrid mic pres, with 1176 style compression, and ADAT A/D conversion/connectivity. This make the 4-710D perfect for recording drums, and expanding I/O for your audio interface.

The Universal Audio 4-710D Channel Strip features classic tube and solid-state tones with 1176-style compression and professional A/D conversion. By merging the best of UA’s classic analog design with smart modern features and workflow enhancements, the 4-710d is the most flexible microphone preamp in the UA lineup. Featuring four high-end mic/line preamps with a unique tube/solid-state tone blending circuit, as well as classic 1176-style compression on each mic channel, the 4-710d also offers tons of digital I/O to expand your setup.

Bring your Mic Collection to Life with a Wide Range of UA Preamp Tones
At the core of the 4-710d are four channels of tone-blending “Twin-Finity” mic preamps. Each channel offers 100% tube and 100% solid-state signal path, as well as the ability to continuously blend between the two circuits. This gives you tons of textures — from creamy to crunchy — and lets you dial in the perfect amount of tube grit or solid-state sheen.

A Legendary Compression Circuit
Each of the 4-710d’s four channels features true-bypass 1176-style compression, including specially tuned "fast" and "slow" settings. This enables quick, on-the-fly tweaking for fattening up a vocal, hold a bass guitar in place, or for adding sizzle and texture to synths and horns.

Add Inputs and Professional A/D Conversion
With eight analog inputs, the 4-710d is perfect for expanding your studio. Digitized via ultra high-quality 24-bit A/D converters at selectable sample rates up to 192 kHz, the 4-710d easily connects to most interfaces with its dual ADAT optical or AES/EBU DB-25 connectors.

    More ins!
    Justin Westfield

This was my first step into outboard pres about a year ago. When you look at what you get for the money this is a really good deal. It's especially useful if your interface has ADAT; you basically get 4 more pres plus 4 more balanced ins without sacrificing any of your interface's main ins. Most importantly, the sound quality is excellent. Don't hesitate!

    Great and flexible!

For the money, this cannot be beat. Keep in mind these aren't 1073s we are talking about. None-the-less, a very flexible unit. With 4 preamps with their own dynamics sections and 4 additional A/D convertors, this unit is used for my mobile recording setup with my UA Apollo Twin.

    Damn it!
    Stephen Lawson

Now I want to go back and recorded EVERYTHING I have ever done prior to receiving this unit from FEA. I am only using the pres and I have to say even without the AD/DA I'd be very happy with this sound at this price.

    Meiron Egger

Of course I enjoy the unit very very much, but especially I want to express my deep gratitude to Shane - through all the process of deciding to purchase until the very moment the shipment actually arrived, he gave me the filling that my satisfaction is his main goal. Tnx for extraordinary treatment!!! It is not my last purchase with you.

What We Think

The Universal Audio 4-710D has burst onto the scene and the reviews are extremely favorable. This piece has certainly challenged the conventions of what kind of value is available for the just-under-2k price point. Seriously, it's a no-brainer. Four 710 Twin-Finity units would run you well over what this piece does... AND the 4-710D has 8-channels of Analog to Digital Conversion via either AES/EBU or S/MUX compatible ADAT optical (access the four additional line-ins for AD channels 5-8, on the rear panel). And if that weren't enough, the 4-710D also includes 4 channels of '1176LN-style' compression right along with the 4 mic preamps. The ability to adjust them isn't what one would have with the full 1176LN or the 2-1176. But the unit includes the two most popular settings for operational modes used by legendary engineers such as Frank Filipetti, who was consulted on the design of the 4-710D. All in all, a pair of these makes an engineer's tracking a snap - especially considering the 710 Twin-Finity's ability to grant you fine tuning between the solid-state and tube preamp paths. It's truly been the hottest piece of gear I've ever seen straight out of the gate.
