The Tube-Tech PE1C Pultec Tube Equalizer is the only program EQ that does exactly the same thing as the original Pultecs did when new. The sound obtained with the PE1C is impossible to get with other standard active EQs due to the filter types, the tube gain stages, and transformers.

The Tube-Tech PE1C Pultec Tube Equalizer is a passive tube based program equalizer designed to meet the exacting standards of even the most demanding studio engineers.

It contains a low frequency boost and attenuation section (shelving), and a high frequency boost section (peaking). The high frequency section has variable bandwidth as well as attenuation (shelving). The filter section is of the passive type followed by a tube based push-pull amplifier to restore the gain.

Input and output are balanced as well as fully floating. Input and output transformers come with a static screen between the primary and secondary wirings.

History of the Tube-Tech PE1C Tube EQ:

The Tube-Tech PE1C program equalizer was originally made as a European exact equivalent of the US Pultec program eq, that became very popular in the US during the eighties in recording studios in New York and LA. The smooth sound of the Pultecs made these eq's very different and attractive. The challenge of this illusive sound motivated Tube Tech founder and designer John Petersen to design and manufacture something that sounded just as good.

The magic test was a Pultec EQ1P on the left and Tube Tech PE1A on the right and check the stereo image: It had to remain perfect on all settings!

The PE1A was the first product carrying the name TUBE-TECH 25 years ago.

The Tube-Tech PE1A is a vintage product still in production! Today the Tube-Tech PE1C is still in production, with little changes in sound from its original design.

The SOUND of the Tube-Tech PE1C:

The PE1C is the only program eq that does exactly the same thing as the original Pultecs did when new. We mean "did" because today the Pultecs often are more "grainy" sounding today due to age and very old components.

The high end boost of the PE1C is a one off a kind and nothing comes close.

Try it on dark sources like a Coles ribbon mike and hear how nice the top end gets opened up without harshness.

The sound obtained with the PE1C is impossible to get with other standard active eq's due to the filter types, the tube gain stages and transformers.

There's a lot of creative possibilities and magic hidden in this seemingly simple eq. The low end section is a combination of two separate passive eq filters with a little different cut/boost frequencies, even though the front panel shows the same frequencies for these functions.

In reality the boost frequencies are a little lower than the attenuation frequencies, something the original Pultecs did and the Tube Tech carries over...

What We Think

avatar

To have a Tube-Tech PE1C Tube EQ on a session is an absolute joy. To have a pair is simply divine. Sounds goofy and over the top, we know. BUT, when you've experienced it, then you'll know why we're gushing. We were fortunate enough to work in a renowned studio where we had several channels of Pultec EQP-1A as well as the MEQ-5 available as standard fare. The EQP-1A became a staple of my bass guitar signal chain and was always engaged on my acoustic guitars. Vocals just came to life as well. So, years later when we found myself in a new studio and needed that same kind of gentle opening/fattening/lifting/clarifying yet multi-dimensional sound that the Pultec would pour onto my tracks, we found exactly what we feared that we would be missing for the lack of Pultecs, afforded in gobs by the Tube-Tech PE1C. "So if you're one of the engineers who have discovered that an outboard hardware equalizer (like an outboard hardware compressor or effects unit) gives a depth and dimension that gets lost in the math (or maybe you never had to make this discovery at all!), then the Tube-Tech PE1C is pretty much the top of the heap in character and sonic goodness.
