The SPL Phonitor 2 is a pretty incredible tool for monitoring, mixing, or just plain enjoying music - especially when you consider that everything that it does, it does without the aid of any kind of digital processing. Personally, headphone monitoring has always bothered me to a degree since it never correlates directly what you hear in the stereo sweet-spot with open air speakers; there is simply no natural crosstalk from the left monitor into the right ear, and so forth. However, I was really eager to see what the Phonitor 2 could do to change my mind about using headphones when mixing. "Setting it up with a CD player and some old favorites (everything from Debussy's 'Nocturnes' to Pink Floyd's 'The Final Cut' to Oliver Nelson's classic 'The Blues & The Abstract Truth', wrapping up with some Fela Kuti - Stalemate for good measure) I engaged the controls, halfway expecting to hear sweeping and over the top changes. This was not what I experienced. However, the more time I spent with it, making minute adjustments to the settings and really honing in on the changes, the purpose of the Phonitor became very clear - it is most certainly a professional's tool for adjusting the virtual listening environment. Basically, you begin by adjusting your speaker angle. I found that I typically hovered at about 30, 40, and 55 degree settings, eventually settling on 40-degrees (Your Mileage May Vary). Then engaging the Crosstalk feature helps you to adjust just how powerful the crosstalk feed is from side to side, but then the Center Level attenuator allows you to drop the increased center level to balance out the L-C-R spectrum. Also, the Phonitor really lets you do everything you can do with a proper professional monitor controller, such as monitoring in Mono (checking phase, for example) to isolating both the Left and Right signals discretely, and more if you consider that you can change polarity on either the L or R signals. Add to this a -20dB Dim switch as well as the ability to adjust the metering range and whether your metering is VU or PPM, and you have a very powerful monitoring device. "The SPL Phonitor 2, like it's predecessor, is really a fantastic option for the recording musician who has a home studio in an environment where a traditional monitoring setup would be impractical to employ most of the time; meaning anyone with a family or someone in an apartment, or whoever needs to work when everyone else is asleep. And it's also a valuable tool for those who prefer to work with headphones in general. The effect is more pronounced with an open-back set of headphones - which really should only be used when mixing or simply listening due to the increased potential for bleed into a microphone if recording vocals. Obviously, the better the headphones you use, the more you'll enjoy the Phonitor 2. Again, the effect is sort of subtle. If you don't hear it, then you're not listening deep enough. And if you don't 'get it', then try to understand that refinement and subtlety can be very valuable things to someone aware of what they need. As just a straight headphone amp, I found that I was listening far longer than I was used to. There was simply less ear fatigue. Though you'll need to be careful. The "gee whiz" factor is pretty high with the Phonitor 2. So, you'll probably find yourself listening louder. So, be mindful of this and turn it down - no need to damage your hearing. Plus, this thing is a rocket. TONS of available gain and headroom. And FINALLY - the SPL Phonitor 2 can become a fully featured rack-mounted, MONITOR CONTROLLER (with monitor switching) with the release of the SPL Expansion Rack for Phonitor 2.
