About Audio Software
All of the various types of Audio Software has grown to tackle a staggering number of tasks and problems that we find when dealing with computer audio. In fact, audio software pretty much dominates as our recorder and mixer of choice in the form of the central Digital Audio Workstation, or "DAW." Avid Pro Tools, with it's wide selection of hardware integration, standalone native ASIO/Core Audio compatibility, plethora of 3rd-party AAX plug-ins, and hardware controllers, and accessories made for it, continues to rule the roost as "the standard" of the recording industry. However, others have grown up outside of the recording industry and have mastered their craft in programs such as Steinberg's Cubase or Nuendo, Cakewalk's Sonar, and more recently, PreSonus' Studio One (formerly KristalLabs Software). And the hardcore "audio nerds" and mastering engineers usually gravitated towards Magix's Sequoia or more DAW-centric Samplitude offerings. While Pro Tools supports AAX plug-ins these days, most other DAWs use a VST plug-in architecture, making these plug-ins the most prevalent. So, it's quite common to find titles from Waves, Universal Audio, Softube, Slate Digital, and more offer support for AAX (Native), VST2 | VST3, and AU (Audio Units - used by Apple Logic). Also, both Universal Audio and Waves offer hardware accelleration / offloaded processing for their plug-ins. UAD-2 plug-ins require UAD-2 PCIe cards, UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt or USB3 devices, or Universal Audio Apollo interfaces in order to operate. Waves, instead, allows you to run their plug-ins within virtually any DAW, but also allows you the luxury of optional offloaded processing when you add any of their SoundGrid Servers to your system (utilizing "SoundGrid Connect"). You also can utilize SoundGrid in conjunction with Waves' joint venture with famed digital console manufacturer DiGiCo - DiGiGrid - to incorporate an extremely low-latency set of network audio interfaces featuring DiGiCo's famed mic preamps and converters. This also opens the door for their new eMotion LV1 Live Sound "touchscreen mixer" - allowing you to dual-purpose your studio gear and software into the live sound domain. A number of Soft-synths / Virtual Instruments / Drum Sample programs exist, too, allowing you to create music including everything from a virtual drummer to a virtual symphony. Amp simulators allow guitarists to add screaming guitar tracks to song files at 3am without waking sleeping children or even the neighbors from across "the holler." And most all of the DAWs incorporate excellent MIDI sequencing to accommodate these virtual instruments, churning out scores with help of lots of on-board compositional tools. And for the composition students and professional composers, Avid Sibelius and longtime favorite Finale! from Make Music are available as professional compositional and scoring tools. Obviously, there is a LOT of software to choose from! And the staff here at Front End Audio is ready, willing, and able to help guide you through the myriad options to help you get the titles you're after. Regardless of your budget or application, Front End Audio can help you decide on the software that will meet your needs and elevate the sounds of your music.
