The Shure SM86 Handheld Condenser Microphone is a cardioid vocal mic designed to offer an extended high frequency response and rugged construction to withstand the rigors of touring. It features a built-in 3-point shock mount to minimize handling noise and a 2-stage pop filter to reduce wind noise.

The Shure SM86 Handheld Condenser Microphone is a unidirectional (cardioid) condenser vocal microphone for professional use in live performance. An extremely rugged microphone, the Shure SM86 withstands the rigors of touring while delivering a clear, studio-quality sound. A cardioid pickup pattern isolates the main sound source while minimizing unwanted background noise. The built-in three-point shock mount minimizes handling noise, and a two-stage pop filter reduces wind and breath "pop" noise.

    Step up from SM 58
    Sandman

I run an open mic attended primarily by singer songwriters and have performed as a solo act for decades. I own and most clubs were I have played use the SM 58 mic. I wanted something that gave me a little more freedom to move in front of the mic (greater sensitivity) and was a little less muddy without sounding brittle (a common complaint about many other condenser mics in this general price range.) I couldn’t be more pleased with the Shure SM86. It’s very natural sounding. I have had no problems with feedback using it with PAs and stage monitors. In addition to accomplishing my original objectives, I have had several people comment that is it much easier to make out lyrics. Keep in mind, because it is a condenser mic, it requires phantom power.

Great Mic - Step up from SM58
    Ross

This is a fantastic mic. It's basically the stage-worthy form factor of a SM58 with the enhanced audio quality of a condenser. I typically use it for vocals, but also used it to mic a guitar amp with good results (though I still prefer a SM57 for amps). It's a great step up from the SM58; I would get it again before a Beta.
