The sound of Rock & Roll
Jan 20th 2011I recently recorded my roommate's rock band and my Shure SM7B was all over the place. First on kick drum which is probably not the best use for a 7B but it worked. Bass ended up sounding powerful with the 7B on the amp. Where the SM7b shined most was vocals - ran the SM7b through a Chandler TG2 and a little compression with either a Distressor or PBC-6a and the result was pure rock and roll. The singer felt he sounded far better then he does in the large studios he usually records at. Couldn't be happier with this mic, but regretting not trying it out on guitars after reading another review here!

great all purpose mic
Sep 28th 2010This mic has to be one of the most versatile out there. I've used it nicely on vocals, guitar/bass cabs, and especially kick drum. Gives a nice complement to the traditional akg d112 on kick. The only thing is this mic needs a lot of juice, way more than just about any mic. Connect it to a high gain preamp and listen to it sing!

Great all purpose mic.
Jul 30th 2010This is a great all purpose dynamic microphone. I use it on everything from vocals to electric guitars to drums and percussion. Very sturdy. The only down side is it needs a preamp up to the task. I use it with a Golden Age GAP 73 and it works great.

THE guitar cab mic!
Jan 12th 2010Like an SM57 with MEAT! I use this to mic my Vox AC15 in combo with a Royer R121. Sounds right on. Think of it as a premium 57 with bigger tranny and more open sound. Sounds richer than my restored vintage RCA BK5.

Smooth and punchy
Feb 12th 2009The SM7b is my go-to microphone for male rock vocals. It does a great job of rejecting off-axis interference, so it's ideal in a low-budget studio where room noise is to be hidden rather than featured. Additionally, I consider it a huge improvement over an SM57 for guitar amps and snare drums (although, admittedly, I'm not all that crazy about '57s). CONS: * It needs a lot of gain, so it's only practical on medium-to-loud sources * Some users are turned off that it doesn't capture the breathiness/presence/air for vocals that a nice condenser will

A must have for all studios
Nov 6th 2008Thriller/BAD and much more! I just got my order in and I must say this is a great mic very warm and thick on hip hop/rock vocals. Its side by side with my 2 U87s/C414s and blue products and holds it own. Different beast but still great sound and great price! Its also great on bass cabs and hi hat!....actually I cant think of anything it doesnt sound good on.
