The Shure SM7B Dynamic Microphone is a "must have" microphone in any studio. Versatile and often seen parked above hi-hats, in front of bass cabinets or as a vocal mic. The Shure SM7B is a studio workhorse and excels on many fronts!

The Shure SM7B Dynamic Microphone is a cardioid studio mic designed to deliver warm and smooth audio reproduction in close-proximity studio and vocal applications. It features wide-range frequency response, bass roll off and mid-range control, and internal air suspension shock isolation. The SM7B is a selectable frequency response microphone that delivers warm and smooth audio in close-proximity studio and vocal applications. Optimized shielding from external electromagnetic hum, along with internal shock mounting, external windscreens and adjustable bass roll-off and mid-range emphasis response settings provide clean, consistent reproduction.

Broadcast Standard
The Shure SM7B is a favorite in radio studios, as its designed to fare well in a broadcast environment. The A7WS windscreen reduces plosive sounds and gives a warmer tone for close-up vocals or narration. And the increased isolation to RFI and EMI due to SM7B's upgraded cartridge make it a no-brainer for when getting it right really matters.

Is Versatile
In recent years, the SM7B has seen time in front of rock vocalists and also does an excellent job of handling low-frequency instruments such as bass guitar. The SM7B has also proven successful on unlikely sources such as hi-hat.

Offers Rugged Reliability
Like all Shure mics, the SM7B is built like a tank, meaning that you can travel with it from gig to gig and rest assured that it will last. Shure mics are famous for their bulletproof construction, and the SM7B is no exception. Session after session, the Shure SM7B will continue to perform on stage and in the studio without flaw.

If you are recording rock vocals that are loud...there is no better mic than this one. This thing can handle a ton screaming or hard rock vocals with ease!

On the advice of a studio engineer/producer, I tried this mic. I had thought is was only for radio broadcasters/spoken word. I used it for lead vocal recording on a new album. The mic was a great improvement, particularly at picking up the high end frequencies. I used it without either foam guard and used a separate wind screen.

I got this microphone because it has been said to have been used for the Michael Jackson Thriller Album and let me tell you, the music that can be made with this mic is nothing short of thrillers!

Needs alot of gain, but sounds great on rock and roll voices, and guitar cabs.

    It's What's Expected
    Stuart Martin

This mic is consistent with 70's versions. I've recorded and heard other vocalists who used this mic, and it always delivers in a way that I expect and depend upon (especially when the session doesn't call for a U47 or U87). A little bit of 1176 after-the-pre works wonders.

    Great Mic

If it was good enough for Michael Jackson in Thriller it's good enough for me. If I want to try another mic sound I use antares mic mod to try different mic options. I also add Sonnox Oxford Inflator at the end of the track chain to raise the apparent volume and add warmth and presence.

There is more than enough great things written about this mic already, I wont add more to the information overload of awesome. I will however recommend to anyone who doesnt know about the need for lots of clean gain to check on their pre's for the adequacy on quiet sources, and especially for audio interface pre's.

What We Think

The Shure SM7B is very much a favorite around these parts - and in pro studios the whole world wide. The SM7B is a very open sounding microphone for a dynamic and exhibits a lower output level making it perfect for 'screamer' vocals and for cranking up your favorite boutique mic preamps. While the SM7B has broadcast vocal clothing (yoke, windscreen, roll-off/emphasis controls, etc), it has a long-standing reputation for doing exceptionally well for rock vocals - live off the floor or as the final isolated vocal. In fact, a great many platinum hits have been recorded with the original SM7 AND with this upgraded SM7B. It really gives you that nice presentation that isn't crisp nor dull. The resulting sound does not disappoint! The integrated windscreen helps to tame plosives and spit landing on the capsule, etc. The SM7B also shows it's worth on bass cabinets, guitar amps, hi-hats, snare drums, the lower rotor of a Leslie speaker, and may just surprise you on a great many of other sources. It's a great mic to have one or more of since it's such a versatile microphone and you're sure to fall in love with it's charms once you've got some time put in with one.
