The Pinnacle Microphones Fat Top II Active/Passive Ribbon Microphone is a short ribbon microphone that delivers a warm, rich, fat, rounded tone.

The bi-directional polar pattern picks up sound essentially equally from both faces with a large null between faces ideal for isolating sound sources. This microphone is fitted with an active/passive switch. When switched to active mode it isolates the output of the ribbon from the microphone preamp, the ribbon is consistently loaded at an optimal value. The active mode requires phantom power and will add up to 20db of gain. Best suited for guitar cabinets, piano, brass and percussion instruments. Can be used in pairs in a Blumlein set up to pick up the entire room. Fat Top II Active/Passive comes standard fitted with the upgraded Lundahl LL2913 transformer. Introducing the upgraded Lundahl to the already quality hardware makes for an extended frequency range. This gives the mic improved definition, lower floor and higher ceiling.

The Pinnacle Microphones Fat Top II Active/Passive is one of those microphones that keeps revealing new tricks the more time you spend with it. While using it in the studio, it quickly started to feel less like a single mic and more like four microphones in one. As with most ribbon mics, you already get different tonal flavors from the front and rear of the ribbon — but the real magic here is the ability to switch between passive and active operation. Running it in passive mode gives you a slightly brighter, more open ribbon sound (relatively speaking, of course), while flipping to active mode introduces a darker, thicker character that feels more modern and controlled. And because that applies to both sides of the ribbon, you suddenly have multiple voicings available just by changing orientation and power mode. It’s surprisingly flexible and incredibly useful when tailoring the mic to different sources. We’ve found the Fat Top II to be a true workhorse ribbon — comfortable on guitar cabs, drums, brass, strings, vocals, and more — with the ability to adapt its tone instead of forcing you to adapt your source. That level of versatility is rare for a ribbon mic, especially at this price point. If you want one ribbon that can cover a lot of ground and let you fine-tune the character to fit the track, the Fat Top II Active/Passive is a seriously smart choice.
