The Phoenix Audio DRS8 MK2 Microphone Preamp uses the well proven and loved Class A Phoenix output stage, along with the latest in transformerless Class A, Discrete Mic Input Technology which gives a valve-like sound.
The Phoenix Audio DRS8 8-Channel Microphone Preamp builds on the the original DRS8 unit's excellent sonic character, color and tone, but with a new improved PSU board and power transformer offering greater power and much improved overall noise performance. The DRS-8 Mk2 has become more flexible by offering detented output channel pots for easier recall also we re-designed the preamp for greater ease of use during recoding by changing the HPF to 80hz from 120hz and replaced the 30db pad with a 15db pad. The DRS8 is an 8 channel solid state class A discrete mic pre amp, each channel has its own dedicated level control, -15db pad, phantom power, phase reverse, high pass filter and mute buttons. The unit has an 8 channel monitoring output facility so all 8 channels can be sent directly to a monitor controller or a patchbay as well as having individual channel outputs.
The design is based on the current family of award winning DRS mic pre amps like the DRS1 & DRS2, that all feature our renowned DSOP2 output stage that offers a full colored saturated sound. Each unit is constructed to a commitment to high quality sonic clarity whilst still offering a distinctive vintage tone. The design of this unit is intended to offer users a high quality multichannel mic pre amp, perfect for studio, broadcast and live applications whilst still being competitively priced for a product of this quality. Phoenix Audio (UK) is dedicated to the development of Class A discrete technology used within high build-quality equipment designed for both the professional and the home studio environment. The DRS-8 Mic-Pre uses Phoenix's well proven and loved Class A output stage (DSOP-2), but also has their latest breakthrough in transformerless Class A, Discrete Mic Input Technology which gives a "valve-like" sound. The DRS-8 is the culmination of over 40 years experience designing Class A circuitry within the Audio Recording Industry. The DRS-8 is based on the first Phoenix unit the DRS2, this bespoke product was launched by Phoenix Audio (UK) in the U.K. in November 1999, and has enjoyed an almost “cult” following ever since. The Class A output stage (TF1) was originally designed by David Rees, the designer of the famous Neve 2253 Limiter and 2254 Limiter/compressor (amongst many other designs), as a retrofit for Neve modules, and the TF1 has now been superseded by the DSOP2 output stage. The Class A, discrete, truly balanced, transformerless microphone input stage was designed to out-perform any transformer input for frequency response, yet has all the characteristics expected in a high quality Class A design.
The Phoenix DRS-8 Mk2 was designed primarily for vocal and instrument recording and live applications where high quality standards are necessary and demanded. The DRS-8 is now finding a new home in broadcast applications, as well.

Phoenix Audio 8 Channel Preamp
May 31st 2014If someone were to ask me to pick 8 channels of really good all around mic preamps and do it in this price point, I'd have to put this one high on the list. It has a sonic profile that just seems to work with a lot of different sources and do it all well. It has quite a clean sound with just a slight tinge of sweetness that is almost tube like. It is a very nice piece worthy of an audition and a very good value to boot.
