The Heil PR-40 Dynamic Microphone, with its broad frequency response, is the ideal mic for bass drums and bass guitar. The Heil PR-40 is a work-horse in the professional recording environment!

The Heil PR-40 Dynamic Microphone represents completely new dynamic microphone technology designed for a wide range of professional applications such as sophisticated recording, live sound, and commercial broadcast. Producing the widest frequency range available in a dynamic microphone, the PR-40 outperforms most condenser microphones, and can withstand huge amounts of SPL. At the same time, it maintains the 25 year Heil Sound tradition of superbly natural voice articulation.

Since 1982, Heil Sound has been the leading manufacturer of communications microphones and has a paramount understanding of phasing. When properly applied, this knowledge creates outstanding cardioid patterns with unbelievable rear rejection that removes unwanted sounds that try to enter from the off axis rear. The pattern control of the Heil PR-40 is outstanding. This exceptional performance is achieved by using the ideal combination of materials for the large low mass diaphragm and a special mixture of neodymium, iron, and boron that gives the PR-40 the strongest magnet structure available. These features allow the microphone to achieve magnificent dynamic range. A unique screen system using two different diameter mesh screens and an internal breath blast filter allow the user to talk closely to the microphone with little worry of pops or excessive sibilance. The large diameter dynamic element is mounted in a unique Sorbothane shock mount atop a non-resonant fixture, decoupling the element from the massive steel body. This body and the internal hum bucking coil removes any worry of using the PR-40 near monitor screens or noisy lighting fixtures and controls. The new technology of the Heil PR-40 has redefined the dynamic microphone with superior wide frequency response, the lowest presence of noise in the industry, flawless design, and elite quality expected by an innovator and leader in the field. Welcome to the new standard.

Terrific buy! Kick, bass, vox, gtr amp!
    Tyler Hawkins

I have had amazing results with everything I have put this mic on. Best bass amp/kick mic I have ever heard (for under a grand). Not always the best for the application, but thats how mics go. I needed 3 mics to record a full band so I bought a pair of Oktava Mk 012's and this mic and have been able to record everything I want with good-great results. Buy it instead of the "typical" bass/kick/broadcast mics you have heard.

    Awesome Kick Drum Mic
    Mark Thornton

I bought this mic looking for a vocal mic that could be used as a multipurpose mic around the studio. What I ended up with was just that, and the best kick drum mic ever! Plenty of low end and smack. I also use it a lot on bass cab. This is the most "condenser" sounding dynamic mic I've heard. Definitely a must have.

    Amazing with electric guitars...
    chris holtmeier

I pair this with an SM57. Can be overly scooped sounding on its own, but combines nicely to make a larger than life, modern rock or metal tone. I now prefer this to an LDC/dynamic combo for heavy guitars.

What We Think

While the Heil PR-40 excels at it's primary design application, which is as a broadcast microphone, it has become a proven player on both kick drums and on bass cabinets. The PR40's open mid-range (somewhat in contrast to the PR30) makes it work well for these already rich and thick instruments who benefit from some light gutting in this area. This is a microphone to use if you are after a more natural tone without the use of equalization. If you need radical boosting of the lows and highs, then look to the PR48 - which is actually based off of the PR30, but exhibits a more forceful sound for maximum impact. Regardless, one of my favorite kick drum sounds that I've ever captured was with the PR40. I'll always love this mic and will bring it out for the right drum or bass cabinet. PLUS, you might see this microphone used on acoustic guitars for live sound and even in the studio where hypey and washy sound is not an option. It's really a perfect option for this application since the top is controlled and the rejection is maximum.
