Great-Sounding Vocal Mic!
Jan 9th 2013I'm a singing drummer, with more than 30 years of experience. I had used a Shure SM-58 for most of those 30 years for my vocals. I recently had the chance to A/B the SM-58 and the Heil Sound PR-22 (UT). First, the articulation on the Heil is far superior to the Shure. Plus, the Heil is better at rejecting ambient sounds from my kit (mainly, the snare drum). My snare bleeding into my SM-58 caused many a FOH engineer to drop the level of my mic to where my harmony/background vocals were practically unheard! The Heil has allowed my vocals to be not only kept at a proper level (due to the rear-rejection), but they also 'cut through' with more clarity, thanks to Bob Heil's innovative engineering gleaned from years of designing mics for amateur radio operators. At a price that is comparable to the 30-plus year-old technology employed in the SM-58, the Heil Sound PR-22 deserves a serious listen from anyone who wants a better-sounding stage vocal microphone.

Fast shipping-great price
Jan 3rd 2013Front End Audio delivered this mic to me as a Christmas gift very fast, on time and without neurosis...hahaha. The Heil sounds GREAT. Clear and with a wide frequency response. It's very smooth and without the boxy 58 sound. I also own a PR30 which is a fantastic recording mic. What's not to like?? Great price, fast service and excellent products!

Heil PR-22
Jun 6th 2012Love this mic too! Put it on my snare turned the EQ off and Bingo! Snare sound great. Let a friend borrow it and he was very impressed on how he needed no EQ! Once you use any Heil product you don't want to go back, simple as that...

Great mic
May 11th 2012Excellent sound. The PR-22 clears up some of the handling issues of the PR-20, and I appreciated being able to buy the UT package with no redundant parts. Feeds back a little earlier than my ksm105, but I can live with it. Also handles loud singing better than the PR 35, which tends to get blatty when pushed (at least with my voice). Great mic, especially for the price.

Impressive Dynamic Mic
Mar 24th 2012Just got this mic after using SM58's and SM57's for years. Noticeable improvement in sound. Clearer and a little brighter than the SM58 for vocals. I got the UT (or utility) because then the price is about the same as the SM58 and I didn't need the case and all that extra stuff.

Either Okay or Great Depending
Nov 2nd 2011This microphone has very little proximity effect. For it's price, the transient response, clarity, and handling noise are just unmatched. It sounds great on some things and okay on other things. I actually love it on snare. It's the best snare mic I have ever used and I'm not exaggerating. It is also great on guitar cabs bringing out nuances that the 57 and 906 just can't reproduce. I can't go back to the "standards" anymore after working with this mic for the past couple years. On vocals, honestly this mic is hit or miss. It has excellent clarity and transient response, but can tend to be on the harsh side for vocals. It handles EQ well though - if I've used my expensive mics already and need another vocal, I wouldn't hesitate to use this over any mic in the price range. Highly recommended, but if for vocals, I'd go with a pricier mic like a PR-35 or a VX5.

Fantastic audio at a great price
Apr 16th 2011I use this microphone for radio reporting, and it's the best sounding handheld mic I've used. Before getting the PR 22 I was using the Shure SM 58, and the Heil is noticeably better. The sound is much richer and feels sturdy and well balanced in the hand. There is some handling noise, which is inevitable with any mic, but it's pretty mild. I'd definitely recommend this mic.
