The Fredenstein F609 500-Series Tube Preamp is a professional tube microphone preamplifier featuring two double-triodes in a single 500-Series rack module. The sound is very smooth with a big, well defined low-end. This module can rock with the best of them!
The Fredenstein F609 500-Series Tube Preamp uses high quality American made input and output transformers. The main feature of the Fredenstein F609 is the combination of the Input Gain knob (0 to +70 dB) plus Output Gain Knob, plus all-tube signal path. The output level control allows to change the characteristic of the amp and to run the first stages all the way up to distortion and it is genuine old-school tube distortion.
The Fredenstein F609 is particulary interesting paired with the F602 tube compressor, if you happen to like high end vintage flavors and genuine tube character. It also pairs nicely with the Artistic Compressor and Artistic Leveller for traditional 70's style tube mic-pre into solid state FET or Opto compressor chains. Some engineers chain all three. Additional features are: 20db Pad, polarity control, phantom power, a two stage low-cut filter, and a standby mode to preserve the tubes if not in use. The traditional VU meter is standard. Not all racks can supply the 250 mA that the Fredenstein F609 requires, but any of the Bento series are well suited to provide that.

Down the 500 Series Rabbit hole
Apr 23rd 2023I have followed the white rabbit and I am in 500 series wonder land - I'll review 2 tubes (F609 and Retro 500 PRE) and 2 1073s (IGS NE573 and Golden Age PRE-573) F609 is solid and feels well built and the stand by switch is a nice add I have used both the mic and the di sections. The DI is currently on a mic'ed Hartke bass cab and it adds enough tube grit to make the bright side of the bass pop. I found it more difficult to get any clean tone with the DI - F609 WANTS to break up when the DI is used. I also experienced some squelching even after 5 minutes of use. It sounds great on mic'ed sources but I found the DI close to useable.

Love'n the tubes
Jan 6th 2022Goes quite well with the Fredenstein F602 Tube Compressor. The two of these in a Fredenstein 2 Bento makes for a really smart package.
