Trident A-Range 500 500-Series Equalizer
By Front End Audio on Feb 6th 2018
It's no secret that the Trident A-Range is one of the most loved consoles of all time. There was a unique sound that only that console could provide. So when Trident revived the A-Range in channel strip form with the Trident A-Range Microphone Preamp & EQ, needless to say – folks we thrilled.
Now Trident is furthering support of this regarded vintage design by bringing the powerful and super musical EQ section to the 500 series format with the Trident A-Range 500 500-Series Equalizer (expected to start shipping in mid-March 2018). As stated by Trident:
“The A-Range is a faithful re-creation of the original four band Trident A-Range equalizer in a 500-Series module format, that will add the unique Trident signature to any program material.
The mid frequency EQ sections are “peaking”, while the high and low frequency sections are “shelving”. A distinguishing feature of both the original Trident A-Range console and this module, is the use of faders for level adjustment, rather than rotary potentiometers. These faders feature a useful center detent at mid travel to denote zero boost or cut of the selected frequency. The use of faders makes it very easy to see not only how much equalization is being applied. Each band is rotary-switch-selectable to one of four frequencies, while individual push buttons engage the three high pass and three low pass filters. An LED peak level indicator is included to warn when levels get too high. The Line level input and output are balanced for maximum signal integrity & high output levels with minimum distortion.”
From the first time I ever got my hands on an A-Range EQ, the thing that surprised me, and stuck with me, was how easily you could dial in a perfect sound, and do so quickly. It felt like it took no effort on my part to get a snare drum “tuned in the mix”, or shape a guitar. Now to have that functionality in 500 format – that is enough to make you smile. Do note that this EQ (utilizing Sowter transformers and other top end components), is a single channel EQ that takes up two spaces (though only utilizes one slot). Make sure you have a big enough 500 Series Power Supply for this bad boy – cause you won't own just one!
