The APEX 460B is a high performance wide diaphragm vacuum tube microphone that delivers incredible versatility and tone. The APEX 460B is an outstanding choice as the main microphone for any professional studio, home studio, or any of the computer based direct to hard drive recording system.

The APEX 460B Tube Microphone is the new version of the world-renowned APEX 460 retains all of its predecessor's features, specs and time-honored reliability while adding a fresh new appearance premiered on the limited-edition APEX 460A Anniversary model. The 12AT7 tube in the APEX 460's preamp stage offers warmth and a smooth transient response not available in solid-state microphone design. The APEX 460B has nine different selectable polar patterns easily available from a selector switch on the front panel of the external power supply.

Rather than limiting the user to the three popular patterns (Omnidirectional, Cardioid, and Figure Eight pattern) most commonly available, the APEX 460B has three gradient stages between each position. This allows the studio engineer or home recordist far more versatility especially in vocal applications where an omnidirectional pattern isn't quite 'fat' enough, but cardioid is too narrow.

Due to their rugged construction, high SPL handling capability and affordable price, the APEX 460B is also an outstanding choice for live sound reinforcement or live recording. They have proven themselves as a versatile overhead microphone for drum kits, for guitar or bass cabinets where superior sound quality and high sound pressure handling is required. They are also the mic of choice for saxophones, flutes, acoustic guitars or acoustic bass where subtlety and clarity is paramount.

Like a thousand dollars microphone for vocals
    elpasadiso-estudio

The reason why I bought this microphone is because I do not believe in brands or reputation that big companies pay to have I believe in good results. My first impression was that this microphone feels robust. It is very versatile and sounds incredible. I use it especially to record Hip Hop vocals. Cardioid mode has a large proximity effect perfect for broadcast and backing vocals and the omnidirectional mode sounds very open so my perfect sound mode is between cardioid and omnidirectional producing a natural ,open, warm sound. I rate this microphone 4 stars because it comes with a chinese tube but I replace the factory tube by a JJ Electronics tube then I connect it to my ART MPA GOLD "customized" with Electro Harmonix tubes and BOOM now my Apex460 sounds like a thousand dollars microphone. Buy it not think twice!

Change the tube and hear how good it is...

The Apex 460, as shipped, is a good every day mic, BUT, swap out the tube for a good NOS Philips or GE 6072 and you'll be astounded. For the price, it's amazing. I'm using it on voiceovers and major market radio newscasts with excellent results. I replaced an AKG 414 with this mic, kept my work consistent and put money in my pocket.

Bang 4 the Buck if ever there was...
    Ronald Hunt

Bright as most chinese manufactured mics are but very useable. I use the windscreen and I always double pop filter vocals anyway...and the results are, believe it or not, pretty good. I've had several conversations with Dave Thomas at AA Microphones and he's gonna modify it for me so that the sound will be more CK-12ish. Carrying Case, shockmount, and power supply are included and the power supply allows patter selection. And guess what? Im going 2 buy another so I can record background vocals the way they should be recorded! Thanks Apex :-)

    apex 460

for the price, this mic is it! i bought it for the sheer purpose of modding and still intend to. as soon as i got it i swapped the tube with an EH 6072a and removed the inner headbasket grill. this mic isn't the quiestest i own, but man does it have character. very vintagey and tubey. i also own a ma-200 and shot it out recently with it. the ma-200 is a stellar mic that is robust and costs ALOT more, but the 460 held its own and had an awesome vibe. i love this mic and with each mod hope to love it more and more. this will become my own akg C12...on a budget.

    It's A Must Have
    VernĀ Monnett

I had to bite, at $189.00, to the door, and check this mic out. I have owned some pretty good mics (AKG 414, 451, Senheiser MD 421), but have never had an acoustic guitar sound I was happy with until now. This mic in the Cardiod towards Omni 1 click position just makes it sound real. It is the best sound I have ever had on an acoustic, and I've been at this for 20 years. I've also used it on both male and female vocals with good results. Are you getting a Neuman or an actual C-12? No, but you are getting a tremendous value for the money. I can't imagine any project or home studio that would not get a lot of use out of this mic. This is an unbelievable bargain at the price, and a completely useable mic at ANY price. If you want an eyeopener, Google Telefunken M-16 vs. Apex 460. If you don't order one of these immediately, I'd like to know why.

What We Think

avatar

In it's natural form, the Apex 460 is an excellent microphone for the price. However, compared to more expensive mics, the 460 might lack an overall clarity, depth, and bottom that most associate with tube microphones. The Apex 460 is a microphone modifier's delight. So, we sell a lot of these mics paired up with the Peluso CEK-12 capsule and the results when modified are very good.
