    Desert island cans
    Jason Loeffler

I have much more expensive headphones but always come back to these. They're just so accurate and comfortable, I can track for hours without a break. Having three different lengths of detachable cables is a huge plus.

    Just what the Doctor ordered
    Alan Webster

I use the ATH M50 phones to help with mixing tracks and they are perfect for that. I use the ATH-D40fs for the Drum booth. Again they are perfect. The clarity of the track coming through is superb. A must for any Studio environment.

    Re-discovering the Joy of Headphones!

I was grinning from ear-to-ear enjoying the sweet detail, effortless mids, non-strident highs, and most importantly, accurate bottom end. Comfy, too!

    Incredible Headphones
    David Percell

Being an engineer and studio musician, I live in headphones. I was really fed up with hyped, midrainge cans ( have tried a lot of hi end cans . I really needed something close to my monitors. Then I found the M50. I have to say now I spend more time with the M50 then with my monitors ( and I have serious monitors, and my room is tuned). I love these headphones.

    Amazing Headphones
    Alan Webster

I've used many different headphones over the years, some good, some not so good. The ATH-M50's are most definitely the best. The clarity is well defined and there is no boomy bass. They are very comfortable as well. But more important, you will get an accurate reading of your mixes, hearing the little sounds you miss in other phones. Simply Amazing.

    Comfortable and accurate

The ATH-M50s are comfortable headphones, both for my head and ears. Can definitely last longer on these than some others, but still experience some fatigue after several hours. Pretty accurate frequency response and dynamics.

    Good monitoring headphones
    Steve

The M50 is a solidly constructed headphone probably well-suited for daily use in a studio (don't have or work in a studio so I can't speak for that). Good isolation and fairly comfortable, with not too much pressure on the ears. Good clean, clear sound with a fair amount of bass thump. More discrete-sounding than the competitive Shure SRH840 and with less of a treble tilt. Better fit on larger heads too.

so comfortable you can mix for hours
    KL

These headphones are awesome. Some days the monitors hardly see any action because these headphones are simply too cushy to put down. I've worn them for 8 hours straight with no strain on the ears, unlike other brands I've tried which gave me a headache. Dynamics are great, very detailed, a joy to use. Love to use them especially when editing. I also prefer them over my sonys when recording bass and electric guitar direct. I seem to hear the mix better on these bad boys

What We Think

avatar

We were quite swayed to feature these headphones based on the ads that Audio Technica placed when they released the ATH-M50 headphones. And why not? In the ads were glowing reviews from engineers like Al Schmitt, Ed Cherney, Frank Filipetti, and George Massenburg. Knowing their penchant for excellence in the studio, we figured that AT must have really hit on something with the ATH-M50. And having several pair of ATH-M40fs headphones in our in-house studio here at Front End Audio, we were was confident that we would be quite pleased with the new offerings from Audio Technica. Sure enough, the ATH-M50 is a beastly pair right out of the box. Depending on your application, you may want to consider whether you want the standard pair with the coiled cable or the ATH-M50s with the straight cable. Our thoughts are that if you are doing live sound or will be in a rolling chair (recording engineer) you'll probably want the standard coiled cable since you won't have the straight cable bunched up at your feet or getting coiled up in your chair's wheels. However, if you are a studio owner who needs high quality headphones for musicians in the studio or if you are a string player looking to have your own pair of headphones to take to sessions, then the ATH-M50s is the best bet for you since the cans won't be picking the distribution box up off the floor with the tension of the coiled cable. How do they sound? Pretty danged awesome if we may say so!. From top to bottom they are a much more exciting and dynamic headphone than the ATH-M40fs, which we find is a nice even sort-of set back sounding that isn't coming at your ears all the time. The ATH-M50 retains some of this but gives just enough "jump" to the sound to really let you feel the lows separate from the the mid-range and high frequency energy. So, when you need to know where that kick drum is, you have no trouble finding it. But we want to stress that they are not nearly as "hypey" as many other headphones are that try to give you big bottoms and sparkling highs, only to provide you with woofy-mud down low and a gaggle of ice-picks constantly jabbing your ears up high. We have done some quick comparisons for folks looking to buy a pair of headphones and when they hear the ATH-M50 headphones vs. what they were thinking about getting for about $100, they don't think twice; they ALWAYS buy the ATH-M50. When we really look at them, it's pretty safe to say that the ATH-M50 headphones will compete against headphones costing $300 or more. Audio Technica has always provided a LOT of bang for the buck and hese headphones are going to offer a lot to pretty much anyone involved in the creation of music, be it producers, engineers, musicians, or just serious listeners. So, we encourage you to try out a pair and see what they can do for you.
